East Troublesome Fire Debris Boom Installation
The East Troublesome Fire in 2020 was the third largest wildfire in Colorado’s history. It decimated national forests in and around Grand County, which is home to Grand Lake and Willow Creek Reservoir. Grand Lake is the state’s largest and deepest natural body of water and plays a critical role in supplying water to end users in northeastern Colorado.
In order to protect dam infrastructure from fire debris run-off and accumulation, the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District contracted Meridiam Partners to install underwater debris booms across the outlet structures at two locations in Willow Creek Reservoir and one location in Grand Lake.
The client purchased Worthington Tuffbooms for MP to install. MP constructed roads and loading areas to transport and stage the project materials. MP installed the boom anchoring systems on the shorelines and underwater. Some unforeseen underwater ground condition challenges were encountered and accommodated with additional drilling and anchoring. MP then assembled and deployed the Tuffboom systems across the outlets via a barge, attaching them to the anchor points.
